DECODING

expo
The House of Visual Culture forms the headquarters of GDFBs organization. It displays the title exposition DECODING. This exhibition shows a new conceptual approach to graphic design.
From a reproductional view, graphic design as a rule, is quite static. A design looks just the same for all observers. User-generated design, wherein the users define the layout of the design generated a major shift in the designer’s role in the product’s design. This kind of design is broadly being applied within the designer’s scope ever since. It does not intrinsically bring new modes of expression.
Recent developments of software and the accessibility of do-it-yourself hardware able the designer to make a step forward. Reproductive design, also known as processing (named after open-source programming) let the designer create unexpected images based on codes and variable input. By combining codes, digital data (for example ambient temperature, human actions or animal behaviour) and new output hardware (i.e. printers, displays), a new mode of expression shapes. Variable factors have more influence to the visual result than the designer himself. The designer is rather more a conceptual thinker or director.
Works on display by: EDHV, Perongeluk, Studio Smack, Jeroen Holthuis, LUST, sndrv, Julius von Bismarck & Benjamin Maus (DE), Fabrica (IT) en Laikafont (CH).
